Backcountry Fly Championship

Guide to Grand Champion and Largest Snook
over the previous two weeks I had been committing a lot of time to preparing for the Backcountry fly championship taking place in islamorada, fl. This tournament kicks off the season of fly tournaments here in the florida keys and is considered the primo backcountry snook and redfish competition. it brings anglers from all over the states and top guides of the florida keys and miami areas. I was contacted by great friend and angler, Jon Dobson, of manhattan, Mt, to be his guide for the championship. this is a largest redfish and snook event. each species must be caught, either one day or both, to take the grand champion spot. there were also trophies for largest redfish and largest snook caught in the tournament. each inch of your largest redfish and snook is added at the end of the day and turned into points. for example, an eighteen inch redfish and thrity inch snook makes a total of forty eight points on the day. over the course of the two day tournament we managed to be the only team to score a redfish and snook each day for a total combined score of 92.25 inches. This gave us the grand champion award (1st place) as well as largest snook award (29.75 inches). jon did an excellent job of getting the fly where it needed to be and doing what i asked of him. over all, we both had a blast on the water and managed to catch a few fish while we were at it!

T-to the-'Poon'......Tarpon

Spring just around the corner
With spring nearing, there is one word on everyones mind here in the keys.......Tarpon. Every spring the florida keys experience a massive migration of triple digit fish draped in scales the size of your hand. Tarpon eat with no remorse, sky several feet out of the water, and exhibit lightning fast speed once hooked. The opportunity for site fishing these beasts is best march through july, specifically april, may, and june. They can be fished "laid up" (floating, stationary), cruising/rolling high on the surface, and many other ways, All of which are great for the fly fishing enthusiast. There is no greater gamefish on the planet to target with a fly than the tarpon. I still have great tarpon dates open so don't hesitate to email or call me for bookings! hope to hear from you soon!
