North Carolina
| Wilmington, North Carolina Redfish are usually synonymous with the salt marsh of Louisiana or the coastline of Florida. Little do anglers know, the state fish of North Carolina is the channel bass, also known as red drum or redfish. All season long redfish inhabit the inshore shallow water flats along the Intracoastal Waterway and can be sight fished with a fly rod, even in the dead of winter. South of WIlmington offers the Cape Fear river system and it's maze of inland mud and grass flats full of stained, nutrient rich waters. Tailing, busting, and waking redfish in mere inches of water make the 'Cape' a magical place to sight fish. To the north lie miles of inland sand flats offering anglers the opportunity to fish clear turquoise colored water, much like the bahamas, where sight fishing is a must. It is not uncommon to find schools of fish reaching the hundreds with single fish in the double digit pound range. The premier guide in the area is Captain Seth Vernon. His knowledge of the lower North Carolina coast is unmatched when it comes to fishing the shallow water flats on fly. Seth is the owner and sole guide of Double Haul Guide Service, operating between New River and Cape Fear River. |
