Yunga Jungle

Salta, Argentina

Stepping off the airplane and onto the tarmac I got my first glimpse of the dense Yunga Jungle. The mountainous terrain and thick jungle canopy is home to monkeys, tropical birds, and one of the greatest fish you can cast a fly towards.

Found only in the Plata and Amazon River basins, the golden dorado is everything you could want in a freshwater fish. Take the fight and acrobatics of a tarpon, combine that with the predator instinct of sharks, and you will have come pretty close to describing the dorado. With a mouth full of razor sharp teeth, it is imperative that a short length of 30 to 40 pound wire bite tippet is used. Dorado have a very hard, boney mouth, so a good strip set is needed to really bury the hook. Much like tarpon, that first set is followed immediately by a violent leap, which is where most fish are lost. There is only one way to describe everything about this fish......badass.

Myself as well as fellow friend and Argentine guide, Fernando Vicens, are going to be offering hosted trips to the Yunga Jungle starting fall of 2010. We will be fishing with Fly Fishing Salta on the Dorado and Alto Juramento rivers. To see what this trip is all about, check out the photo gallery titled 'Salta'.
